How to Tell If Your Houseplant is Happy

Much like us humans, our plant friends want to be understood. It takes time, patience and practice to learn the language of your plant, but once you start to make the effort, you will notice how happy your plant can be!

here are five signs that tell if your houseplant is happy!

Bouncy Leaves

Happy plants have a pep in their step. Leaves are bouncy and have an upright appearance - happily hydrated and feeling as good as they look.

One of the best signs of a happy plant is new growth. Plants sprout baby leaves when they are healthy, stable and strong. It is key this is happening during the warmer months of spring and summer. Most (but not all) go dormant in fall/winter, so don’t fret if you are not seeing new growth at this time.

While colorful foliage can be wonderful and magnificent, it can also be a sign of an unhappy plant. Unless naturally multicolored or variegated, a healthy plant should have a vibrant, uniform coloration.

Think about a plant’s natural habitat and how water is received: Rain. Not one giant blast of water in single spot, but even and steadily, as nature does. Of course, our potted houseplants don’t have the luxury of living in rainforest, but we can mimic their native environment by using tools like humidifiers, watering stakes and other irrigation controls. Although it can be hard to monitor, root growth is a key indicator of a happy plant. Especially after repotting, plants must root down and literally get their bearings before they are able to grow up. Roots are the foundation, literally. Happy roots, happy plants!

Remember it is a process. not all plants are happy all the time, just like us humans are not either. They grow through ups and downs. Take the time to learn the language of your planty and that will give it reason enough to be happy.
